Plain films of the calcaneus may be diagnostic and demonstrate heel spurs. If no spur is demonstrated or more information regarding disease activity is required then a limited single-phase NM bone scan of both feet is recommended since this examination will demonstrate the presence or absence of active inflammation at the plantar fascia insertion at the calcaneus, and provide evidence of some otherwise unsuspected abnormality of the bones of the feet and ankles.
