UTI in a Child

An US of the kidneys and bladder followed by a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) is the standard evaluation. CT, NM (renal NM scan), and MRI are second line tests indicated only in specific circumstances as determined by the initial imaging procedures. A male child is traditionally evaluated after the first UTI; many pediatricians don't evaluate a female child until a second UTI has occurred since urinary tract infections of benign etiology are relatively common in girls.
